Frequently Asked

Straight answers.
No fluff.

These are the questions every Sydney couple asks before booking a wedding DJ. No salesy spin, no wedding-industry bullshit — just honest answers from a bloke who's been doing this for 25 years.

How much does a wedding DJ cost in Sydney?

In Sydney in 2026, wedding DJs typically run from $1,200 to $3,500+. Here's how it breaks down honestly:

Under $1,200 — newer operators, cheap gear, usually no backup. For the biggest day of your life, it's a risk.

$1,500–$2,500 — where most experienced Sydney wedding DJs sit. Proper equipment, proper planning, proper experience. This is where I am.

$2,500–$4,500+ — premium packages with MC, custom lighting rigs, effects like cold sparklers or LED floors.

My DJ packages start at $1,899 inc GST for Sydney metro. That gets you pro sound and lighting, full reception coverage, planning consultation, wireless mic for speeches, backup gear, and setup/pack-down. See full package details here.

What's actually included in your package?

At $1,899 inc GST you get:

— Pro sound system + dance floor lighting sized to your venue
— Full reception coverage from guest arrival to last song
— Planning consultation + full run sheet
— Wireless mic for speeches and toasts
— Unlimited song requests + playlist chat before the day
— Backup equipment on-site (if something breaks, another one's ready to go)
— Setup + pack-down sorted, no stress

What's NOT included in the base price: ceremony audio (add-on) and travel beyond 25km of the CBD ($2/km return on the full distance). I'm upfront about this so there are no surprises.

How far in advance should I book?

Short answer: as soon as you've locked in your venue and date.

Here's the reality. I only take 35–40 weddings a year so I can give each couple proper attention. Peak season in Sydney is October to April, and Saturdays in those months book out 12+ months ahead. Sometimes 18 months.

If you're getting married in winter or midweek, you've got more time. But if you've got your heart set on a specific Saturday in March, don't wait — I've turned down a LOT of couples who left it too late.

Best move: send me your date and I'll let you know straight away if it's still free.

Do I need a DJ and an MC, or just one?

Honest answer: most weddings only need one person doing both.

I do both. I've been MCing weddings for over a decade — reading the room, keeping the run sheet on track, introducing speeches, knowing exactly when to say something and when to shut up. Having one person in charge of the music AND the flow is usually smoother than splitting the two.

When you DO need a separate MC: if someone close to you (best mate, funny uncle) is dead-set on doing it, or if you want a specific bilingual MC for cultural reasons. Otherwise, combining DJ + MC saves you money and keeps the night tight.

I offer MC-only packages from $1,000 inc GST if your venue already has decent audio.

Do you travel outside Sydney?

Yep. I regularly play weddings in the Southern Highlands, Hunter Valley, South Coast, Blue Mountains and Central Coast.

No travel fee for venues within 25km of Sydney CBD.

Beyond that, it's $2 per km return on the full distance. So a venue 40km from the CBD = 80km return x $2 = $160. For further afield (think Hunter Valley or Bowral) it covers my drive + the day's equipment transport. Much fairer than a flat "travel fee" that catches people out.

For destination weddings further out, we'll sort accommodation separately — usually one night at the venue or nearby.

What happens if you get sick or can't make it?

This is the question that should keep every couple up at night when booking ANY supplier, and most DJs hate answering it. Here's my answer:

In 25 years I've never missed a wedding. I plan my life around Saturdays from October to April — no big holidays, no risky activities in the lead-up, no going on the piss the night before. It's just the job.

But shit happens. If I was genuinely incapacitated (hospitalised, immediate family emergency), I've got a network of trusted Sydney DJs I've worked alongside for years. I'd personally coordinate the handover: my planning notes, your run sheet, your playlists, your no-play list — all handed over so your night still runs.

And I carry Public Liability Insurance as standard — it's always included, never an add-on, and documentation is available for any venue that asks.

Do you take song requests from guests?

Your call entirely. Some couples want an open floor, some want zero requests, most want something in between. We'll talk about this in the planning session.

What I always recommend:

— A "must play" list (the songs you HAVE to hear)
— A "do not play" list (the ex's song, the cheesy one, the family drama one)
— Guidance on the vibe (high energy vs elegant vs mix)

Then on the night, I read the room. If Aunty Karen requests a song that'll clear the floor, I politely steer around it. If a guest requests a banger I know will pop off, in it goes. Years of doing this means I know pretty quickly what's going to work.

Do you handle the ceremony as well?

Yes, as an add-on. Ceremony audio isn't included in the base DJ package because some venues already have their own PA setup for the ceremony — no point paying for something you don't need.

If your ceremony venue doesn't have sound (a garden, a winery lawn, an outdoor deck), I bring portable PA, lapel mic for the celebrant, handheld mic for vows, and cue your processional/recessional music. Usually $300-$500 depending on setup.

Best bet: mention your ceremony location when you get in touch and I'll tell you if you need it or not.

What makes you different from other Sydney wedding DJs?

Honest bit: a lot of wedding DJs are decent. The real difference comes down to three things:

Experience that actually transfers. 25 years behind the decks, 120+ five-star Google reviews, ABIA recognised. I'm not a part-time nightclub DJ moonlighting at weddings — weddings ARE the job.

You deal with me directly. No booking agency, no "we'll assign a DJ closer to the date." You chat with me now, you meet with me before, I turn up on the night.

No bullshit pricing. My $1,899 is on the website. The travel formula is on the website. What's included is on the website. You know exactly what you're paying for before you enquire. Most Sydney DJs hide their pricing to force the enquiry — I think that's dodgy.

The short version: 25 years, real reviews, direct contact, honest pricing. Download my free "7 Red Flags" guide if you're still working out how to vet DJs — it'll help even if you don't book me.

Do you bring backup equipment?

Always. Every wedding I turn up with:

— Backup DJ controller in case the main one fails
— Backup laptop with your full playlist synced
— Backup microphone (wireless mics eat batteries unpredictably)
— Spare cables for everything
— Phone hotspot in case venue wifi drops

Gear fails. Weddings don't get a redo. Having backups is non-negotiable — honestly if a DJ doesn't bring backup, that's a red flag on its own.

Can you work with our venue's existing sound system?

Yes and no — depends on the venue.

If the venue has a decent house PA (most Sydney function venues do), I can plug into it directly. This is great for venues where the ceiling is high or the room shape is tricky — the installed system usually sounds better than anything portable.

If the venue has a basic system or none at all, I bring my own. All my packages include pro sound regardless.

Before your wedding I'll speak to your venue's coordinator directly to confirm what's available, what works, and what we need. You don't have to be the go-between.

How do we book, and what's the deposit?

Dead simple.

1. Send me your date and venue — I reply within 24 hours, usually same day.

2. If your date's free, I send through a quote tailored to your wedding.

3. If you want to lock it in, we sign a contract and you pay a small $500 deposit to secure your date. The rest is due 30 days before your wedding.

Book within 14 days of enquiring and the Dance Floor Lighting Upgrade is on me — normally $500, yours free. Real offer, no fine print.
