Wedding DJ at The Grounds of Alexandria — DJ Joe Barrs

The Grounds of Alexandria is one of those venues that does a lot of the heavy lifting for you.

The aesthetic is stunning — exposed brick, lush greenery, warm string lights. Couples who book The Grounds usually have impeccable taste, and they expect everything on the night to match. That includes the DJ.

I’ve played weddings at The Grounds and what strikes me every time is how the space rewards restraint. The venue has its own atmosphere. Your job as a DJ isn’t to overpower it — it’s to complement it. I lean into sophisticated, textured music choices here. Think soulful house, neo-soul, classic R&B, and well-chosen anthems that hit at exactly the right moment.

What I’ve learned playing there

The Grounds has multiple event spaces, so the first thing I do is get the exact room confirmed and talk to the coordinator early. Load-in logistics matter here — it’s a busy precinct and timing your bump-in around their kitchen and other operations requires a bit of coordination.

Acoustically, the space can be lively depending on how it’s dressed. I always bring a rig that gives me control over the room — clean, full sound without muddying the natural ambience that makes the venue special in the first place.

Music considerations

Couples at The Grounds tend to be Sydney inner-west or creative industry crowds. They usually have strong music opinions, which I love. I encourage every couple to send me a do-not-play list and a handful of artists they love — at a venue like this, personal curation makes all the difference between a good night and an unforgettable one.

Getting there

The Grounds is in Alexandria, about 20 minutes from Sydney CBD. It’s well within my standard travel zone, so no travel surcharge applies for Sydney metro bookings.
